Hero's of My Career
Jack Firestein
Jack Firesteinen ran the Unity Folk Club, I was about 16 years old when I first went there, a chap called John took me there, he preferred to be called Peewee, he drove a Robin Reliant three car. The club was always packed and anyone who wanted to sing was a allowed one song. An old feller called Joe and a very tall younger man called Con took me under their wings and introduced me to many other London Folk Clubs. Jack sat in the corner at the front and made copious notes about all the proceedings. Jack gave me my first opportunity to sing in a Folk Club. Click the link above for a biography of Jack. Once in a while we would have a concert in the theatre Pete Atkin came once I sang So Long Marianne by Leonard Cohen, a man in the audience said to me as I walked away from the stage 'You know something the others don't'. Pete became a producer at the BBC. Anotehr time Johnny Foreman was the guest he sang I want a Proper Cup of Coffee I heard it the once and have sung it all over the world since.
